I started Dick Reeves Design in 1977, after working as an art director at a local Austin printing company for 4 years. I knew being a freelance artist would make my life a little more difficult but probably a lot more fun. Geared up with only T squares and a drafting table my partner at the time, John Wilson, and I found an old, drafty office space above Maggie Mae’s on 6th Street in Austin. We loved being a part of the burgeoning “cool” scene on 6th Street. What a great office that was until the wet, cold, winter set in and we were un-nerved by witnessing a murder in front of the iconic Green Spot Cafe.

Time for our second office; We settled in at a house at 14th and Nueces and stayed there for several years. At this time, my interest in the Austin music scene lead me to start a concert photography company, Glory Optics. I attended over 200 concerts that first year and developed many contacts and friends in the music business. I began designing albums for Texas legends, Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Guy Clark, Asleep at the Wheel, Joe Ely as well as national artist Carole King. My album work quickly became what I was known for. At the same time I had developed a broad client base in the corporate world and built a successful graphic design company. I helped design and publish periodicals and was honored for my work in designing historical books with an ADDY Gold for excellence in design.

 

After 40 years, I bring a wealth of experience to the table. From album art to corporate identity to book design, my abilities have been well accepted and awarded culminating in being honored with a Grammy for Best Recording Package at the 58th Grammy Awards in 2016 for my work with long-time clients, “Asleep at the Wheel.”

 

The best part of my business is that it is still fun!
